About SAFE

The Arab Food Safety Initiative for Trade Facilitation, known as the “SAFE Initiative”, is a regional initiative led by the League of Arab States (LAS) and its specialized agencies: the Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO) and the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD).

The key objective is to facilitate regional trade in food/agri-based products and improve integration through strengthening the regional coordination and harmonization mechanisms on conformity assessment and Food Safety systems following international best practices on TBT and SPS.

The SAFE Initiative is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

About the Food Safety Scientists Community

The SAFE initiative aims to establish a sustained engagement between the Food Safety Science Community and the Arab Task Force (ATF) on Food Safety – which is a specialized inter-governmental steering group established within the framework of the SAFE initiative. Such engagement will enable to conduct the relevant analysis, gap identification, and prioritization of investment requirements to sustain efforts of food safety standards development, coordination and harmonization in the region.

One of the key actions will encompass mapping of Arab universities to identify their areas of interventions in food safety science, document their current and future research drivers, as well as their programmes on food safety training and educational curricula, with the aim to enhance such programmes in a manner that coincides with the SAFE initiative objectives and contributes to promoting evidence-based decision making.

The SAFE initiative encompasses a food safety science engagement approach with the aim to enhance the contribution and involvement of the Arab Food Safety Science community, as a foundational element of reshaping the food safety regulatory and standard setting requirements in the Arab region.
